Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has hailed Jasprit Bumrah as the best fast bowler India has ever produced in the history of men’s international cricket.

Bumrah concluded the second day of the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test with figures of 3-48 from 12 overs, despite receiving little support from his fellow bowlers. His figures could have been even better had Ravindra Jadeja not dropped Ben Duckett at backward point on 15.

Bumrah dismissed Harry Brook at the end of day two, but replays revealed it was a no-ball. “There is no question he is India’s greatest fast bowler. I played with Kapil Dev, but this guy is different. He can dismantle any opposition, on any surface, in any format.”

“I thought Malcolm Marshall was the best I saw in reading a batter and setting him up, but this guy is not far behind. Where I have seen Bumrah improve is in getting swing with the new ball. When he swings the new ball, it becomes hard for any batter in the world to counter him, given his action and late release,” said Shastri in a conversation with Sky Sports ahead of day three’s play.

Shastri also mentioned that India still holds an advantage and could strengthen their position if Bumrah delivers another stellar performance in the first hour. “I think India will be disappointed that they didn’t add another 75 or 80 runs, but getting Root out at the end of day two has levelled things.”

“I believe they still have the upper hand. They have the runs on the board, and Bumrah can change the game within the first hour. If he can take a couple of wickets, India will feel they can secure a lead,” he added.
