Mitchell Marsh was horribly out of form for Australia in the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 33-year-old all-rounder from Perth played the first four matches of the home series against India but was only able to score 73 runs in seven innings and take three wickets. Due to his poor form, he was dropped from the playing XI of the fifth Test at Sydney Cricket Ground, where his replacement Beau Webster scored 57 and 39 (not out) runs in two innings and sealed Australia’s win by six wickets inside three days.
During the annual Australian Cricket Awards in Melbourne on Monday, February 3, Marsh joked about how Australian fans are treating him post his poor show in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which Aussies won after 10 years. The Baggy Greens made a memorable comeback in the series after losing the first match by 295 runs in Perth and went on to seal the deal with a scoreline of 3-1.
The Australian T20I captain, who won the Allan Border medal last year, was asked, “Have you felt the love from the Australian public this year? You know, the nation loves you. Have you felt the love?” to which he replied by saying, “Yeah, prior to December, I felt a lot of love. Post-December, a bit of a different story.”
“But all jokes aside, I mean, over the last few years here, I’ve felt a lot of love from the Australian fans,” he added.
Marsh, who was the member of the Australian team that won the ODI World Cup 2023 title in India, will miss the upcoming 2025 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy. Marsh was included in the Australian squad on January 12 but was ruled out of the eight-team tournament due to a persistent back injury on January 31.
It has been reported that Marsh’s injury could also leave his IPL stint with Lucknow Super Giants in jeopardy. The Lucknow-based franchise signed him for Rs 3.40 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
“Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Men’s Champion’s Trophy with ongoing lower back pain and dysfunction,” the statement said. “His lower back pain flared in recent weeks, leading the NSP to make the longer-term decision for Marsh to complete a more extended period of rehabilitation.”
