Former Indian off-spinner Ravinchandran Ashwin lauded his former teammate Ravindra Jadeja, calling him a “more gifted” cricketer than Ashwin himself, while also highlighting how the media does not “appreciate” Jadeja enough.
The experienced all-rounder Jadeja found himself amongst the elite Indian cricketers after picking up three wickets in the first ODI against England in Nagpur on Thursday.
The 36-year-old finished as the pick of the Indian bowlers after the first innings, where England were bundled out for 248. He finished with figures of 3/26 in 9 overs.
Jadeja has grown to become the benchmark for what an all-rounder is meant to be. He can be a force to be reckoned with both batting and bowling-wise but also can also chip in on the field. Through the years, he has become one of India’s most important players in all three formats.

Ashwin on Ravindra Jadeja:“Jadeja is way more gifted than I ever can be”.
– The way Ashwin appreciated Jaddu without any insecurity and anything, not many big names come and say that the other guy is better than me✨

“Our media fails to appreciate when a player does well. Whenever we lose, everyone becomes a villain. He dismissed Joe Root (in the 1st IND vs ENG ODI). Jadeja goes always under the radar. He is a “Jackpot Django”. He is +10 in the field, also bowls well and bats in pressure situations as well. We don’t give Jadeja enough credit,” Ashwin said on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat.
Following his performance last night, Jadeja joined the likes of Anil Kumble, Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh and Kapil Dev to have taken 600 wickets in international cricket. He becomes the fourth spinner and fifth overall to the feat among Indian bowlers.
Amongst cricketers across different nationalities, Jadeja becomes the 26th cricketer to have taken 600 wickets across all three formats. He has taken 323 wickets in Tests, 220 in ODIs and 54 scalps in the T20I format as well.
Jadeja decided to call time on his T20I career after India’s successful run in the 2024 T20 World Cup, retiring alongside fellow teammates, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
