Ramandeep Singh made his T20I debut for India on Wednesday (November 13) against South Africa during the third T20I of the ongoing four-match series played at SuperSport Park in Centurion. The 27-year-old Punjab-based all-rounder in his maiden match for India came out to bat at No. 7, and on the first ball itself, he scored a six against South African pacer Andile Simelane. By scoring a six on the first ball he faced in his international career, Ramandeep equalled Suryakumar Yadav’s record.

He became the second India cricketer after Surya to smash a six on his T20I debut. In his maiden T20I innings for India against England on March 18, 2021, at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Surya also opened his account by scoring a six off Jofra Archer’s bowling.

Surya scored 57 runs from 31 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes in that match and won the Player of the Match award, whereas Ramandeep, in his maiden T20I for Men in Blue, scored 15 runs from six balls.

He was run out by Heinrich Klaasen on the second last ball of the 20th over of Indian innings during his attempt to take a quick single.

Before returning back to the dugout, Ramandeep added 28 runs for the sixth wicket with Tilak Varma to help India cross the 200-run mark for the second time in the ongoing four-match series.

Tilak, who was promoted to bat at No. 3 in the third T20I, top-scored for the Suryakumar Yadav-led side by remaining unbeaten on 107 runs from 56 balls. During his stay at the crease, he scored eight fours and seven sixes. He is the second youngest Indian batter after Yashasvi Jaiswal to score a century in the shortest format of the game, and he also equalled Sanju Samson’s record of scoring most runs in a T20I match played between India and South Africa.

For his superb show with the bat in the match, which India won by 11 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the series, Tilak won the Player of the Match award.

The fourth and final T20I of the ongoing series is scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on Friday (November 15).
