Legendary Indian wicketkeeper-batter Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be seen in action for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2025. The 43-year-old cricketer was retained for Rs 4 crore by the Chennai-based franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Dhoni, who has more than 5000 runs to his name in the world’s richest franchise cricket league, has begun his preparations for the upcoming 18th season in Ranchi.

Dhoni, who quit CSK’s captaincy ahead of the start of IPL 2024, was recently spotted training in an indoor facility and using a mobile phone in between the practice session. The rare video of Dhoni using a mobile phone is now going viral on the internet.

According to Dhoni’s close friends and relatives, the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning Indian team captain doesn’t carry a phone, and it’s very hard to contact him beyond the cricket field.

Dhoni has played in all 17 seasons of the IPL so far. There were reports of him calling time on his IPL career after the conclusion of the 2024 season of the cash-rich league, but he didn’t announce his retirement and instead was retained by the Men in Yellow under the uncapped player rule for Rs 4 crore.

Apart from Dhoni, CSK retained Ruturaj Gaikwad (Rs 18 crore), Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 18 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (Rs 13 crore), and Shivam Dube (Rs 12 crore) and signed the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Sam Curran, Rahul Tripathi, Khaleel Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj, Noor Ahmed, Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Nathan Ellis, among others, in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

CSK, which is the joint-most successful team in IPL history, secured the services of Ashwin for Rs 9.75 crore in the mega auction that took place in Jeddah on November 24 and 25. Ashwin last played for CSK in the 2015 season of IPL.

Star Afghanistani spinner Noor was CSK’s most expensive buy in the IPL 2025 mega auction. The five-time champions signed the 20-year-old spinner for Rs 10 crore. Noor played 23 matches for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023 and 2024. CSK used the RTM card for signing New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra.
