Star India and Rajasthan Royals batter Riyan Parag was the latest player to be asked by the umpires to put his bat through a gauge test, as the practice has raised quite a few eyebrows and has left a few people unimpressed, with Rahul Dravid clearly upset over the tests conducted on Riyan’s bat on Wednesday.
The incident occurred when Riyan came in to bat, replacing Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson, who had to retire hurt due to an injury.
According to updated regulations implemented by BCCI for IPL 2025, umpires can hold on-field checks of bats to ensure that they follow the prescribed size. Watch the video here:
When the umpire held the routine check on Riyan’s bat using the gauge, it was determined that it didn’t meet the necessary standards. Riyan was then asked to select a different bat to begin his knock.
Unimpressed with the gauge test, Riyan was seen trying to explain his position to the umpires. When all this was going on, the cameras moved to Dravid, who had a blank expression on his face.
Dravid didn’t look impressed at all by the series of events, but he did manage not to show that on the cameras.
“Riyan Parag has just about passed the batometer (gauge). A few issues at first, but it seems to have squeezed in that everyone is going on here,” former England spinner Graeme Swann said while commentating.
“You know what he’s telling the umpire there? You’ve already checked my bat in the dressing room. Why are you checking it again? And it finally goes through. He plays with the same bat,” Swann’s fellow commentator said.
Riyan wasn’t the first batter asked to change his weapon in IPL 2025. Kolkata Knight Riders’ Sunil Narine and Anrich Nortje’s bats couldn’t pass the gauge test either during the match against the Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on Tuesday.
