Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma scored 119 runs from 90 balls in the second ODI against England, which was played at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday. During his stay at the crease in his 50th ODI as India captain, Rohit hammered 12 fours and 7 sixes and helped the world No. 1 side chase down the target of 305 runs in 44.3 overs for the loss of six wickets. The 37-year-old right-handed batter, who is one of the three Indian captains to win the ICC trophy, would like to come up with a big show in the third ODI as well.

The final match of the bilateral series between India and England is scheduled to take place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, February 12. If during the last match of the home series, Rohit manages to score at least 13 runs, then he will become the second-fastest batter in the world to score 11,000 runs in ODIs.

Rohit has 10,987 runs to his name in 267 ODIs played so far since making his debut against Ireland on June 23, 2007, in Belfast. The record of scoring the fastest 11,000 runs in ODIs is held by Virat Kohli. Kohli crossed the 11K-run mark in his 222nd inning of the 230th ODI match. Rohit, on the other hand, has batted 259 times in 267 ODIs played so far.

Fastest to 11,000 runs in ODIs

  • Virat Kohli (India) – 222
  • Sachin Tendulkar (India) – 276
  • Ricky Ponting (Australia, ICC) – 286
  • Sourav Ganguly (India, Asia) – 288
  • Jacques Kallis (South Africa, ICC, Africa) – 293

If Rohit manages to score century in the third ODI as well against England then he will become the third Indian batter after Sachin Tendulkar and Kohli to score 50 centuries in international cricket. Tendulkar finished his career with 100 centuries in 664 matches played across formats, whereas Kohli has 81 centuries to his name in 544 matches played so far.

During the second ODI against England, Rohit broke Chris Gayle’s record of 331 sixes in ODIs, and the veteran of 267 ODIs smacks at least 14 maximums in Ahmedabad; then he will become the leading six hitter in the 50-over format of the game. As of now, the record of hitting most sixes in ODIs is held by former Pakistan captain and legendary all-rounder Shahid Afridi. Afridi played 398 matches for Men in Green during his 19-year-long ODI career and smashed 351 sixes.
