Rohit Sharma became the first Indian captain since MS Dhoni to lose a Test series at home as New Zealand clinched the second Test of the three-match series at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Saturday.

With the loss, New Zealand took an unassailable 2-0 lead against India, the third and last Test match begins on November 1 at the Wankheded Stadium in Mumbai.

New Zealand also registered their first-ever series win on Indian soil in Test cricket history. New Zealand, having won the opening match by 8 wickets, celebrated their first-ever series victory in India since touring in 1955-56 under Harry Cave.

The last time India had lost a home Test series was in 2012 when a visiting England team clinched the four-match series 2-1. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the India captain then as Virat Kohli was in charge of the Indian men’s cricket team in the interim and did not lose a single home Test series before Rohit Sharma took over.

In fact, since the home Test series loss to England in 2012, India have played 18 Test series at home and have not been beaten at all. In those 18 Tests, India have won 42, drew 7, and lost just 5 Tests.
