In a forgettable moment for Indian captain Rohit Sharma, he dropped the easiest of catches at slips off Jaker Ali to deprive Axar Patel of his first international hat-trick, in the 2025 Champions Trophy clash against Bangladesh in Dubai on Thursday. The skipper couldn’t help himself but beat the ground in frustration, a clip of which is now going viral on social media.
It happened in the ninth over of Bangladesh’s first innings in the clash. Patel snapped up Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim on the second and third balls of his over, with KL Rahul taking two excellent catches behind the stumps. The left-arm spinner welcomed Jaker with an 89.8 kph length ball just outside off, drawing him into a forward block which took a quick edge to Rohit’s left at first slip.
Rohit timed his move well and even got both hands to it, but couldn’t hold on. Watch the drop and his reactions here:
After beating the ground four or five times in frustration, Rohit was also seen apologizing to his bowler. Patel had his hands on his head and couldn’t believe his luck.
He had bowled brilliantly for the first two wickets. On the second ball, Hasan’s wicket was almost a mirror image of Jaker’s drop, but the edge was just finer and easier to catch for Rahul.
Patel didn’t even hear the edge but the umpire gave out on Rahul’s appeal and Hasan walked off after deciding against a review. Later, UltraEdge showed that there was a clear deflection.
On the next ball, Rahim, one of Bangladesh’s best-ever players of spin, didn’t have the answer to a brilliant length ball that pitched in the middle and turned slightly away from him. It was a much clearer edge this time and no one had any doubts about the dismissal.
Patel could have become the first Indian to take a hat-trick in the Champions Trophy and the fifth from the country overall in ODIs after Chetan Sharma, Kapil Dev, Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav.
