The second ODI of the ongoing three-match series between India and England is scheduled to take place at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday, February 9. During the second match of the home series, Indian captain Rohit Sharma will have a chance to overtake former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid in an elite list. If Rohit, who has 10,868 runs to his name in 266 ODIs played so far, manages to score at least 22 runs on Sunday, then he will break Dravid’s record of 10,889 runs in the 50-over format of the game.

During his 15-year-long ODI career, Dravid played 344 ODIs and amassed a total of 10,889 runs. He scored 10,768 runs in 340 matches for Team India, 75 runs in one match for Asia XI, and 46 runs in three matches for ICC World XI against Australia in October 2005.

Most runs in ODIs

  • Sachin Tendulkar (India) – 18,426
  • Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka, Asia, ICC) – 14,234
  • Virat Kohli (India) – 13,904
  • Ricky Ponting (Australia, ICC) – 13,704
  • Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka, Asia) – 13,430
  • Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka, Asia) – 12,650
  • Inzamam-ul-Haq (Pakistan, Asia) – 11,739
  • Jacques Kallis (South Africa, Africa, ICC) – 11, 579
  • Sourav Ganguly (India, Asia) – 11,363
  • Rahul Dravid (India, Asia, ICC) – 10,889
  • Rohit Sharma (India) – 10,868

If Rohit, who got out after making 2 runs from seven balls in the series opener, manages to score at least 132 runs in the match, then he will break Sachin Tendulkar’s record and become the second-fastest batter in the world to score 11,000 runs in ODIs. Tendulkar, who is the all-time leading run scorer in the 50-over format of the game, crossed the 11,000-run mark in his 276th innings for India. On the other hand, Rohit has only batted 258 times for India so far.

The overall record of being the fastest batter to score 11,000 runs in ODIs is held by Virat Kohli. The former India captain crossed the 11K mark in his 222nd innings.

Fastest to 11,000 runs in ODIs

  • Virat Kohli (India): 222
  • Sachin Tendulkar (India): 276
  • Ricky Ponting (Australia): 286
  • Sourav Ganguly (India): 288
  • Jacques Kallis (South Africa): 293
  • Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka): 318
  • Inzamam-ul-Haq (Pakistan): 324
  • Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka): 354
  • Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka): 368

During the second ODI, Kohli will have a chance to complete 14,000 runs in ODIs. The 36-year-old right-handed batter, who missed the first ODI against England in Nagpur on Thursday (February 6), has 13,906 runs to his name in 295 matches played so far. Kohli needs 94 more runs to become the third batter in the world after Sachin (18,426) and Kumar Sangakkara (14,234) to join the elite list.

Kohli will also become the fastest batter in the world to score 14,000 runs in ODIs. If Kohli scores at least 160 runs on Sunday, then he will break Ricky Ponting’s record and become the third-leading run scorer in international cricket.
