Indian fans can breathe a sigh of relief as skipper Rohit Sharma provided a positive update on the status of his knee injury, stating that he is match-fit for the upcoming Boxing Day Test against Australia on Thursday.
Rohit faced a bit of an injury scare this past Sunday, when the 37-year-old batter was was hit on his left knee while facing throwdown specialist Daya during India’s second practice session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground ahead of the fourth Test against Australia, which is set to start on December 26 at the same venue.
It was reported that Rohit continued to bat on for a while longer, but needed to be tended to soon after.
But, Rohit dispersed all the aspersions being cast around his fitness, stating to the media that he was all fine, in a presser ahead of the Boxing Day Test.
“It’s fine,” Rohit stated very matter-of-factly when asked about his injury.
Rohit missed the first Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and Australia due to the birth of his second child. But his outings since his return have been lacklustre, failing to register any meaningful scores with the bat, as he continues to tinker.
The Indian skipper struggled to get going against Australia, scoring 3, 6 and 10 in the three innings since returning from home before the second Test.
“Nothing has changed since I last spoke about it. We’ve has two sessions, and in those sessions, what can change?” Rohit stated when asked about adapting to the new conditions at practice.
“Those pitches in which we trained for the last couple of days were used pitches. Perhaps they were used for Big Bash. Now, today is the only day where we are going to get the other side of it, which will be a fresher wicket. So, we will go and see how it is and train accordingly.”
With the series tied 1-1, India and Australia will play the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, starting on December 26.
