Kerala’s grand annual Pooram celebrations offered a rare sight this year, showcasing cutouts of Indian cricketers. Pooram is a vibrant Hindu festival celebrated throughout Kerala. The festivities feature caparisoned elephants, traditional music and elaborate processions. In a unique blend of tradition, this year’s celebrations were further amplified by the unusual inclusion of giant cutouts of popular Indian cricket stars, including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, among others. A Rohit Sharma fan page has now shared a video of the celebrations on X (formerly Twitter). “Pooram in Kerala, Indian Team,” the post read.
The video captured cutouts of the Indian cricketers being paraded through the streets of Kerala atop elephants, each figure was shaded by a ceremonial umbrella. India skipper Rohit Sharma’s cutout was at the heart of the parade with Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah to his left. Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal shared one umbrella amid the celebrations.
It was recently announced that the iconic fireworks of Thrissur Pooram will take place in all its grandeur this year. “There will be no compromise on safety, but the fireworks will go ahead traditionally and spectacularly,” said Revenue Minister K. Rajan, as per The Hindu. “All legal requirements will be met. We’ve already taken expert legal advice, and necessary measures are being implemented. The fireworks will be just as magnificent as every year,” he added.
Another post featuring Rohit Sharma’s cutout from the Pooram celebrations went viral on X. The photograph captured the Indian skipper’s figure atop one of the elephants as the traditional rituals were carried out. “The craze for Rohit Sharma in Kerala,” the post read. Rohit was donning the same jersey in which India ended their ICC Trophy drought by winning the T20 World Cup in Barbados, West Indies. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa by seven runs to win their second crown in the tournament’s history.
As for Rohit Sharma, the India skipper is currently representing the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. The Hitman has struggled with consistency this season, failing to make any significant impact for the Hardik Pandya-led side. He has scored a mere 56 runs in five outings for MI this season. Rohit will be looking to turn things around when the five-time champions face the Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 23.
