Pakistan spinner Sajid Khan has revealed that he used Urdu to misguide England bowlers Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir in the Rawalpindi Test. Sajid produced a brilliant performance for the hosts after he was included for the second and third Tests of the three-match series.
While Sajid left England in a web of spin, he also showed his cheeky side while batting. He revealed to have been chatting with Saud Shakeel loudly in Urdu while batting to deceive English bowlers.
“We were only doing that (speaking loudly in Urdu) to deceive the bowlers. Rehan and Shoaib understand Urdu, so to fool them, we wanted them to hear we were only looking for the single,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Sajid as saying.
On the second day of the third Test, after Shakeel and Sajid didn’t bother about the stump mic picking up their voice as they chatted about how to manage the strike.
The discussion, however, was not intended for each other but for the English spinners. “When we did that, they brought the field up and the bowlers flighted it. Saud told me once they do, no half measures: just go for the big shot as hard as you can,” Sajid said.
Sajid was presumably planning to see off the last two balls of the over. But he danced down the wicket to launch Bashir’s ball into the stands. In the next over Bashir bowled, Sajib struck two sixes and a four in similar fashion.
The plan did not seem to work against Rehan though who manage to keep Sajid quiet.
Later in the game, Rehan acknowledged the quality innings from Sajid but was having none of his claims.
“He didn’t fool me at all, he just said it for the media. I didn’t even hear him. He said something like he’s going to run down this ball and I knew he was going to try and scoop me, and it didn’t really work. I think he batted well, and he hit some big blows, but he didn’t really fool me or Bash,” Rehan said.
