Young Australia batter Sam Konstas and Jasprit Bumrah were involved in a heated argument ahead of the close of play on the opening day of the Sydney Test. The incident took place after the fourth ball of the third over. As Bumrah walked back to his mark to bowl the next delivery, Konstas, who was at the non-striker’s end, appeared to be saying something to the bowler. Bumrah responded and the two players were seen walking towards each other and they got involved in an argument. The umpire had to intervene to control the situation. Reacting to the incident, former Australia cricketer Tom Moody criticised Konstas’ behaviour. Moody even felt that the senior players must offer “guidance” to the youngster.

“Sam Konstas has much to learn. I hope the dressing room is offering that guidance without suppressing his confidence and youthful enthusiasm,” read the post shared by Tom Moody on X (formerly Twitter).

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting was not impressed with Konstas engaging in a verbal spat with Bumrah and said that he did not like Konstas getting involved in the matter.

“I didn’t like Konstas getting involved. That was not his battle to fight. It was between Khawaja and Bumrah. So, for the young man there, I hope that there was some talking to from the Australian dressing room last night because he should have stayed out of it, let his senior player try and handle the last couple of balls. And of course, when you play with the game, the game has a way of coming back and biting. That happened to Khawaja last night,” Ricky Ponting told Channel 7, as per ESPNcricinfo.

Earlier in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Konstas made headlines having been shoulder-bumped by Virat Kohli in the fourth Test. Later, he was even seen mocking Kohli and Indian fans by copying the shoulder bump, having been requested by the Aussie fans.

Konstas was dismissed for 23 in the first innings of the Sydney Test against India. Mohammed Siraj claimed the wicket of Konstas in the 13th over. Responding to India’s 185-run total in the first innings, Australia managed to post 181. The visitors ended the second day’s play at 141/6.
