Sanju Samson, who became the first Indian batter to score back-to-back centuries in T20Is on Friday (November 8), created an unwanted record on Sunday (November 10) during the second T20I of the ongoing four-match series between India and South Africa. In the match played at St. George’s Park in Gqeberha, the right-handed wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed for a three-ball duck by Marco Jansen. The South African pacer breached Samson’s defence and shattered his stumps.

By getting out for a naught in the second T20I, Samson became the first Indian batter in history to score four ducks in a calendar year. Samson, who was playing his 11th T20I of 2024 on Sunday, had scored 0 against Afghanistan in Bengaluru on January 17, 2024, and then he failed to open his accounts in the second and third T20I of the three-match series played between India and Sri Lanka in the last week of July 2024 in Pallekele.

Most ducks for India in a calendar year in T20Is

  • Sanju Samson – 4 in 2024
  • Virat Kohli – 3 in 2024
  • Rohit Sharma – 3 in 2018

Samson has been dismissed without scoring any run in a T20I match on five occasions, which has helped him equal KL Rahul’s tally. Rahul, who last played a T20I match for India in November 2022, has also failed to open his account in five out of 72 matches played so far.

The overall record of scoring most ducks for India in T20Is is in the name of former India T20I captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit, who is the most capped player in T20I history and also holds the record for scoring most runs, failed to open his account in 12 out of 159 matches played during his 17-year-long T20I career.

Legendary Virat Kohli, who also called time on his T20I career after India’s win in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, is second on the list with seven ducks in 125 matches.

A total of four batters—Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka), Soumya Sarkar (Bangladesh), Paul Stirling (Ireland), and Kevin Irakoze (Rwanda)—have been dismissed without scoring a run in a T20I match on as many as 13 occasions, which is a world record of most ducks in the shortest format of the game.
