Sanju Samson has suffered a fracture to his index finger and will reportedly be back in training after 5-6 weeks.
India wicketkeeper-batter, Sanju Samson has fractured his index finger after being struck by a bouncer off Jofra Archer during the fifth T20I between India and England that took place at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the 30-year-old has made his way back home to Thiruvananthapuram and will be back in training after undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and would need clearance to get back to the national side.
An unnamed source within the Board of Control for Cricket in India has suggested that it would take five to six weeks before he can be back training in the nets. This would also mean that he would miss out on Kerala’s quarterfinal clash against Jammu and Kashmir set to begin on February 8. His return is likely to be for the upcoming Indian Premier League season, leading the Rajasthan Royals.
“Samson has fractured his right index finger. It will take him five to six weeks before he can resume proper nets. So there is no chance of him playing the Ranji Trophy quarter-final for Kerala (vs J&K) in Pune from February 8-12,” a BCCI source in the know of things told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
“In all likelihood, his comeback will happen in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals,” he added.
Taking strike at the start of the innings, Samson started with a maximum when he pulled one for a maximum. But in the third delivery off the over by Archer, the shorter delivery went on to strike Samson on the gloves and had called in for the physio as well. He powered through the injury as he went on to smash 16 runs off the first over. His innings came to an end when trying to attack the shorter delivery off Mark Wood but found the fielder by the deep square-leg region.
The report claims that the swelling had increased once he made his way to the dugout. It resulted in Samson being on the bench for the second innings and Dhruv Jurel had come in as a substitute. The scans had shown that he had suffered a fracture on his index finger.
The good news is that India does not have any T20is scheduled at the moment with the ODI series and the Champions Trophy 2025 coming up. Samson’s next assignment would be the away series to Bangladesh set to take place in August.
