An emotional Abbott, who delivered the unfortunate delivery that hit Hughes on the neck, broke down following a tribute to the Aussie batter during NSW’s game against Tasmania at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday and was consoled by his teammates.
The 27th of November 2024 marks the 10-year anniversary of the Australian batter Phil Hughes’ passing after being hit on the neck by a Sean Abbott delivery in a Sheffield Shield match.
Hughes, a beloved Aussie cricketer, sustained the fatal blow during the game between New South Wales and South Australia while batting on 63. He was given mouth-to-mouth in an attempt to resuscitate him, before being shifted to the St Vincent Hospital in Sydney, where he underwent surgery and was in a state of induced coma before he breathed his last.
An emotional Abbott who delivered the unfortunate delivery broke into tears while observing a minute’s tribute to the Aussie batter during NSW’s game against Tasmania at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday and was consoled by his teammates.
The Australian Cricket Team named him the 13th man in their squad against India at Adelaide back in 2014 and observed a 63-second applause in his honour.
Cricket Australia have produced a short documentary chronicling the life of the boy from Macskville, which will be played ahead of Australia’s second Test at Adelaide against India in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy, slated to begin on the 6th of December.
CA have also organised, and have been following, a two-week tribute for the batter with players sporting a black armband during the Sheffield Shield games over the past week.
