In Shakib’s match for Surrey, he took nine wickets across both innings but Somerset managed to win by 111 runs.
Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan has been asked to have his bowling action analysed by the England and Wales Cricket Board after the umpires reported him for suspect bowling action during his one-off appearance for Surrey in the County Championship.
In the match, Shakib had picked up nine wickets against Somerset in September, after bowling over 60 overs across both innings and picking up a total match haul of nine wickets while giving away 193 runs in the contest that took place at the County Ground in Taunton.
As per a report by Cricbuzz, the umpires Steve O’Shaughnessy and David Millns had deemed the Bangladesh spinner’s bowling action to be suspect. But the all-rounder would not be suspended from playing as he would undergo additional testing in the next few weeks.
However, an interesting point is that Shakib’s bowling action has never been suspect in his long career, during which he has amassed 712 wickets across 447 matches for the Bangladesh national team.
“The matter (Shakib’s suspect bowling action) has no connection to international or domestic cricket in other countries. The matter is under ECB jurisdiction and not related to ICC or other boards,” a BCB official was quoted as saying.
It was earlier suggested that Shakib would look to call time on his international career but with the political situation in Bangladesh and his involvement with the now-ousted Awami League political party.
He had targeted to play the 1st Test against South Africa in the recently concluded home series, but due to the potential security threat, he did not participate.
Shakib is arguably the finest cricketer to come from Bangladesh, having delivered countless times for the national team with both the bat and ball. He also finds himself amongst the best all-rounders of the current generation.
He was not selected for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan as the report suggests that he needed more time to recover.
The ODI series against Afghanistan will be played in the United Arab Emirates and will begin on November 6, 2024.
