Yograj Singh, the father of the legendary Indian all-rounder, Yuvraj Singh, revealed details regarding some of the hiccups when mentoring a young Abhishek Sharma, who is now wreaking havoc in the Indian Premier League and the Indian T20I team.
In an interview with News18 Punjabi, Yograj revealed how Yuvraj was furious at the young left-handed batter who had not gone to bed in time and how Yuvraj reacted to this.
“Sham ko party, girlfriend yahi hai na? To phir kya hua? Yuvi ne kaha ki taala laga iska. Jab Yuvi ke havale hua kyunki father se handle nai ho rha tha toh usko tala lagaya gya. Aur phir joothi bhi nikali gayi. (Partying, spending time with girlfriends, all these things, right? Yuvi told him to put the lock on him. When he was under Yuvi’s watch because his father could not handle things, he told to put him under lock and key. He even took out his shoes.)
Yograj added, he had called him and asked where he was. He told him it’s 9 pm, go to bed, do you understand me? He then gave the phone to his father and went to sleep. Told his father to wake him up at 5 AM. (Phone kiya ki kahan hai, kidhar hai? Maine dekha Yuvi ko bolte hue. 9 baj gaye hai, go to bed, do you understand me? Phone father ko pakde gaye aur so gya, bola usko 5 baje uthane ko”.
Yograj even mentioned that a similar instance with Shubman Gill, but Yuvraj had asked his father not to interfere in the matter and how it was not right to constantly punish children.
“Yeh Shubman Gill ke saath bhi hua voh batting kar rha tha, Yuvi coaching kar rha tha PCA mein. Mujhe kaha ji Papa aap beech mein nahi bologe. Mein kahan thik hai ji. Hum baahar baith gaye. Aaj kal ke bache ko nahi 24 ghante daante rahege. Mein kahan koi baat nahi (This even happened with Shubman Gill as well when Yuvi was coaching him at the PCA (Punjab Cricket Association). He told me not to interfere, and I agreed. We were sitting outside, and he told me that I cannot punish kids for 24 hours these days. I then agreed).”
Abhishek has certainly made the most of his early years, as he has now cemented himself as one of the best opening batters in the shortest format. He is currently underway with his campaign in the Indian Premier League, where he represents the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
