Shami will lead India’s bowling attack in the five-match T20I series against England, which is set to start on January 22 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Star fast bowler Mohammed Shami is all set to make his India comeback after 14 months. The 34-year-old pacer, who was last seen in action for Men in Blue in the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia on November 19, 2023, was named in India’s T20I squad on January 11 for the upcoming five-match series against England. The series opener is scheduled to take place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on January 22. Ahead of joining Team India’s camp for the home series, Shami took to Instagram on Friday to share his excitement for the series.
In a post that is now going viral on the internet, Shami shared a video of him packing his kitbag and captioned, “The wait is over! Match mode ON as I prepare to rejoin Team India.”
Shami will lead India’s pace attack in the T20I series against England and will have Arshdeep Singh for support. Arshdeep is India’s most successful fast bowler in the shortest format of the game, and the left-arm pacer also finished as the joint-leading wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Shami, who missed the T20 World Cup and IPL last year due to a groin injury, is also in line to be picked in India’s ODI squad for the three-match series at home against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. India will play its Champions Trophy matches in Dubai, and the final of the eight-team tournament, which is making a comeback after eight years, will also be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium if India qualifies for it.
Shami made a successful comeback in domestic cricket in November 2024. He played Bengal’s Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh in Indore and then also represented the side in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Shami’s record in T20Is
Since making his debut against Pakistan in Mirpur on March 21, 2014, Shami has played 23 T20I matches for India and has 24 wickets to his name. His last match in the shortest format of the game for India was against England in Adelaide on November 10, 2022.
