The Indian skipper feels that Shubman Gill’s stunning knock against Bangladesh should not come as a surprise to anyone as the batter’s century resulted in the Men in Blue beginning their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a six-wicket win over Bangladesh in Dubai on Thursday.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, the Indian captain praised the team for their performances throughout the game. Reflecting on the conditions, he has yet to conclude as to whether today’s performance saw the team losing out on a chance to improve their net run rate considering that it was their first game in Dubai.

“Very hard to say that (on the pitch playing slow) after just one game. You play the conditions and try and think about what you do. We assessed the conditions well as a team. You are bound to be under pressure in a tournament like the Champions Trophy,” Rohit Sharma commented as quoted by Cricbuzz.

He also praised Shami for his brilliant performance as he continues to impress in ICC tournaments. He picked up a fifer in the first innings which saw Bangladesh being bundled out for 228.

“Very happy for him (Shami), long time waiting. We know what he brings to us. We need guys like him to stand up when we need,” he shared.

Talking about Gill’s performance he suggested that the batter has set high standards for himself and today’s performance was just another day for the opening batter.

“We know the class that he has, Shouldn’t surprise anyone. It was good to see him bat till the end. May take him for dinner tomorrow,” Rohit said.

The Indian captain found himself in the spotlight when he dropped an easy catch at the slips, denying Axar Patel his hat-trick. Reflecting on that moment, Rohit admitted that the catch was an easy one but such mistakes can happen to anyone.

“No, that was an easy catch, I should have taken that catch with the standards I have set for myself. But I do know these things are bound to happen. Credit to Hridoy and Jaker, they stitched a nice partnership,” he said.

India will now look forward to their next group-stage game which will be against arch-rivals Pakistan. Both teams will look for the win as the Men in Blue look to secure their spot in the semi-finals while their opponents battle for survival.
