Star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, who was not included in India’s 18-member squad picked for the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia, registered his best score in First Class cricket on Thursday (November 7) by scoring 233 runs for Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match against Odisha. The 29-year-old right-handed batter came out to bat at No. 5 for the Ajinkya Rahane-led side at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai, and during his 228-ball stay at the crease, he hammered 24 fours and nine sixes.

He added 354 runs for the fourth wicket with Siddhesh Lad, who was unbeaten on 165 runs from 331 balls at the time of lunch on Day 2.

Iyer, who missed the last Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai against Tripura in Agartala, looked in great touch during his stay at the crease and scored an aggressive double century. Before the 233-run knock in the ongoing match, Iyer’s highest score in FC cricket was 202 not out.

In his last match for the defending champions, Iyer scored 142 runs against Maharashtra at the same venue and set up a 9-wicket win for his team.

Iyer, who last played a Test match for India in Visakhapatnam from February 2 to 5, was dropped from BCCI’s list of centrally contracted players in February after he ignored team management’s request to play the Ranji Trophy.

After his name was removed from the list, Iyer made appearances for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy and also played in the Irani Cup 2024 match against the Rest of India side last month in Mumbai. Iyer, who is hoping to make a comeback in India’s Test team, also led India D in three matches of Duleep Trophy 2024 in September but was unable to play a big knock with the bat.

He led the Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title win in May but was not retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Iyer, who is the only captain in the world’s richest franchise cricket league’s history to reach the final with two teams, is all set to be part of the mega auction, which is scheduled to take place in Jeddah on November 24 and 25.

In the auction, due to leadership and batting, Iyer will not be short of suitors and is expected to trigger a bidding war between multiple franchises.
