Star Indian opener Shubman Gill entered his name in the history books on Wednesday, February 12, by becoming the fastest batter in the world to score 2500 runs in ODIs. Gill, who made his ODI debut for India on January 31, 2019, against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton, is playing his 50th ODI match for India on Wednesday against England at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He broke former South African batter Hashim Amla’s record. Amla crossed the 2500-run mark in ODIs in his 53rd innings for the Proteas.
Gill needed 25 runs on Wednesday to complete 2500 runs in ODIs, and he achieved the objective by scoring a boundary on the fifth ball of the 10th over of India’s innings bowled by Gus Atkinson.
Gill is in red-hot form in the ongoing series between India and England. The Punjab-based cricketer hammered 87 runs from 96 balls in the series opener played at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on February 6, and in the second ODI at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday (February 9), the 25-year-old right-handed batter scored 60 runs from 51 balls.
Gill has a batting average of more than 60 in ODIs, and he would like to convert his good start in the third ODI into a big score and help India whitewash the English team ahead of travelling to Dubai to take part in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Before stepping out to bat for India in the last match of the home series against England, Gill also moved to the No. 2 position in the ICC ODI batter’s rankings. He leapfrogged his opening batter and India captain Rohit Sharma. Gill has 781 rating points, whereas Rohit has 773 rating points.
Former Pakistan captain and star batter Babar Azam is the world No. 1 ODI batter. The 30-year-old cricketer from Lahore has 786 rating points.
Like Gill, Babar is playing an ODI match on Wednesday, and if the right-handed batter manages to score at least 33 runs for Pakistan against South Africa in Karachi during the third match of the tri-series, he will become the fastest batter in the world to score 6000 runs in ODIs.
