Indian ODI vice-captain Shubman Gill replaced skipper Rohit Sharma to rise to the second spot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) ODI rankings in the February 12 update, just a week before the start of the 2025 Champions Trophy, and on the day of the final ODI of the three-match series against England in Ahmedabad.

Gill is now just five rating points behind Pakistan star Babar Azam (786 points), who retained his top spot. Although Rohit slipped to number three, he isn’t too far from Gill and Babar either with his 773 points. Among other Indian batters, Virat Kohli slipped two spots to number six, while the in-form number four batter, Shreyas Iyer, barged into the top 10 with 669 rating points. KL Rahul also dropped three places to 16th.

Kohli’s plummet allowed Ireland’s talented batter Harry Tector to jump to number four with 737 career points. South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen rounded off the top five with 736 points.

India’s best ODI bowlers in the rankings were also on the wrong end of the latest weekly update. Kuldeep Yadav, who was dropped for the second ODI against England, slipped three places to number five with Namibia’s Bernard Scholtz taking his number two spot. But, the difference between them is still four points.

Mohammed Siraj has been left entirely out of the ODI squad. Due to that, he’s now placed at 10th in the table, down by four. He’s still India’s best-placed pacer in the rankings with Mohammed Shami at 13th.

Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli’s rankings to get better after 3rd ODI

At the time of reporting this piece, Gill had reached his seventh ODI hundred in the Ahmedabad match against England — a return which will certainly get him even closer, if not over Babar in the next update. Rohit got out for 1 (2), getting caught behind against Mark Wood, and might slip a bit, while Kohli broke his streak of low scores with a 52 (55) which will likely help him gain some lost ground back.

The ICC updates the men’s rankings every Wednesday, which will be February 19 for the next update. It’s when Pakistan will take on New Zealand in Lahore to kick off the 2025 Champions Trophy.
