Shubman Gill top-scored for India in the first ODI against England, which was played at Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday, February 6. The 25-year-old right-handed batter came out to bat at No. 3 in the 249-run chase and, with the help of 14 fours, scored 87 off 96 balls. For his super show with the bat in the series opener, Gill won the Player of the Match award. The vice-captain of India’s ODI team would like to maintain his red-hot form in the second ODI as well, which is scheduled to take place at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday, February 9.
During the second ODI against England, Gill, who has 2415 runs to his name in 48 matches played so far, will have a chance to create history. If the right-handed batter manages to score at least 85 runs in the match, then he will become the first batter in the world to score 2500 runs in ODIs in less than 50 matches.
As of now, the record for scoring the fastest 2500 ODI runs is held by former South African batter Hashim Amla. During his playing days, Amla crossed the 2500-run mark in 53 matches for the Proteas.
Since making his ODI debut for India against New Zealand in Hamilton on January 31, 2019, Gill has played 48 matches and scored one double century, five centuries, and 14 fifties. He is the first batter in the world to register 20 fifty-plus scores in ODIs in less than 50 innings.
During the second ODI match, apart from Gill, Shreyas Iyer will also have a chance to complete 2500 runs for India in ODIs. In 58 innings of 63 ODIs played so far, 30-year-old Iyer has scored 2480 runs. His batting average in the 50-over format of the game for Team India is 47.69, and in the first ODI played against England in Nagpur on Thursday, the 30-year-old batter from Mumbai scored 59 runs from just 36 balls.
In addition to Iyer and Gill, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will also have a chance to achieve personal milestones. If Kohli manages to score at least 94 runs, then he will become the fastest batter to score 14,000 runs in ODIs, and Rohit needs 22 runs to overtake Rahul Dravid in the list of leading run getters in ODIs.
