India bowling coach Morne Morkel has provided a massive update on Shubman Gill’s injury ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener on Friday in Perth. The 25-year-old was hurt while fielding on the second day of the intra-squad match simulation. After being taken for the scans, it was learned that Gill had fractured his left thumb and might not be available for selection for the opening Test.

Addressing Gill’s situation, Morkel said the young batter is showing improvement every day. However, a final call on his participation in the first Test will be taken before the toss on November 22.

“Shubman is improving on a day-by-day basis. We will take a call on the morning of the Test. He played well in the match simulation during the build-up, so fingers crossed,” Morkel said during India’s first press conference since arriving in Australia.

Gill has showcased exceptional form this season, amassing 806 runs in 10 matches across 19 innings, with an impressive average of over 47. His performances include three centuries and three half-centuries, with the highest score of an unbeaten 119.

Batting at number three, Gill has accumulated 926 runs in 14 matches, maintaining an average of 42.09. Across 25 innings, he has recorded three centuries and three fifties, further solidifying his reputation as a dependable top-order batsman.

Gill’s absence could be massive for the national team as he is not only a stable number three batter and in case of Rohit’s absence, could have been considered for opening the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The other man in contention is KL Rahul. He had bruised his elbow after getting hit by a Prasidh Krishna short ball on the opening day of the intra-squad match and was forced to leave the field. However, he returned to the next the next day and was completely fine to play the first match.
