Pujara hammered 1769 runs in 35 World Test Championship matches for India, whereas Gill has 1770 runs to his name in 29 matches played so far.
Star Indian batter Shubman Gill on Saturday (November 2) broke Cheteshwar Pujara’s record of 1769 runs to become India’s fourth leading run scorer in the World Test Championship (WTC). Pujara amassed a total of 1769 runs in 35 WTC matches for the Indian team, whereas Gill, who is batting at 61, now has 1770 runs to his name in 53 innings of 29 matches. The overall record of scoring most runs for India in the WTC is in the name of Indian captain Rohit Sharma.
Rohit has scored 2674 runs in 37 matches played so far. He is followed by Virat Kohli, who has 2426 runs to his name in 41 matches.
Most runs for India in WTC
- Rohit Sharma – 2674
- Virat Kohli – 2426
- Rishabh Pant – 1927*
- Shubman Gill – 1770*
- Cheteshwar Pujara – 1769
Gill, who made his Test debut for India on December 26, 2020, against Australia in Melbourne, has scored his seventh Test fifty in the ongoing match against New Zealand, and he would like to convert his good start into a big score now at Wankhede Stadium to help India post a big total in the first inning of the ongoing third Test.
India has already conceded the Test series against New Zealand after losing the first two matches played in Bengaluru and Pune by 8 wickets and 113 runs, respectively. But the hosts can’t afford to lose the third Test because that will not only be an embarrassing moment for the Rohit Sharma-led side, but it also will impact their chances of qualifying for the WTC 2025 final.
Gill, who has scored three Test centuries for India in 2024, missed the series opener against New Zealand in Bengaluru due to fitness related issues. He replaced KL Rahul in the playing XI for the second match which was played at MCA Stadium in Pune last week. But he failed to score big runs with the bat and was dismissed for 30 and 23 runs.
In the ongoing third Test, Gill has added 86 runs so far for the fifth wicket with Rishabh Pant, who has scored an attacking fifty (36 balls) in the morning session to put the Kiwis on the backfoot after they managed to take some advantage late on Friday by dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj, and Virat Kohli in quick succession.
