Nathan Lyon described the ‘out of the blue’ run-out of Yashasvi Jaiswal as ‘one of the best barbeque’ he has seen.
Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon called the horrific mix-up between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli that led to the opener’s run-out on Friday a ‘coach killer’ — using a rugby term — and ‘one of the best barbeques’ he has ever seen. He admitted that it came out of the blue for Australia and allowed the hosts to build further pressure on the Indians.
Jaiswal was run out for 82 (118) when he hit a crisp drive off Scott Boland to mid-on and scampered to the other end. Kohli, at the other end, didn’t see him and was watching the ball. Till the time he turned around, they were at the same end and Alex Carey collected a Pat Cummins throw to take the bails off at the striker’s end to break the 102-run stand.
“It was probably one of the best barbecues I’ve seen,” Lyon told ABC Sport. “It came out of the blue. They were doing it pretty easy out there. I know pressure does funny things, and we were able to build that little bit of pressure. Silly run-outs are coach killers, aren’t they?”
Even as the debate was raging among Indian fans about who made the mistake, Kohli edged one behind seven balls later and night watchman Akash Deep followed him soon after. Kohli’s wicket was particularly disappointing as he had batted 85 balls with almost flawless control to reach 36 and looked set for a big one in helpful conditions.
Australia’s Steve Smith, who scored 140 (197) in the first innings felt the same.
“He looked really good today. I thought, ‘Geez, he’s in for a good one here’,” Smith told reporters after the day’s play. “It was probably the first ball I think he actually played out on that fifth, sixth stump line. He was really disciplined today. He was leaving nicely, making the bowlers come to him a bit more, and scoring well through the leg side when we went short,” he added.
From a decent position of 153/2, India ended the day at 159/5 trailing by 310 runs. It’ll be on Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar to help the visitors avoid the follow-on and get as close to Australia’s 474.
