30-year-old all-rounder Corbin Bosch made his Test debut for South Africa on Thursday, December 26, and during Day 1’s play of the ongoing Boxing Day Test against Pakistan at SuperSport Park in Centurion, he picked up four wickets for 63 runs in his quota of 15 overs. He opened his wicket account by dismissing Pakistan skipper Shan Masood (17) on the first ball of his Test career and then also got the better of Saud Shakeel (14), Aamer Jamal (28), and Naseem Shah (0).

After helping the hosts dismiss Pakistan for 211 runs in the first innings, Bosch made his presence felt with the bat as well. He came out to bat at No. 9 for the Temba Bavuma-led side, and with the help of 15 fours, scored 81 runs (unbeaten) from 93 deliveries.

By scoring 81 runs in his first outing, Bosch created history on Friday as he now holds the record for scoring the most runs as a No. 9 batter on Test debut.

The right-handed batter from Durban broke Sri Lanka’s Milan Rathnayake’s record. Rathnayake made his Test debut for Sri Lanka against England in Manchester on August 21, 2024, and scored 72 runs from 135 balls.

India’s 1983 World Cup winner Balwinder Singh Sandhu is third on the list of batters with the most runs on Test debut as a No. 9 batter. Sandhu made his Test debut for India against Pakistan in Hyderabad (Sind) on January 14, 1983, and scored 71 runs from 88 balls after coming out to bat at No. 9 for the Sunil Gavaskar-led side.

During his stay at the crease on Friday, Bosch added 41 runs for the ninth wicket with Kagiso Rabada (13) and 47 runs for the 10th wicket with Dane Paterson (12). Thanks to Bosch’s knock, South Africa recovered from 213/8 and posted a total of 301 runs in the first innings to take a handsome lead of 90 runs.

South Africa, which sits at No. 1 position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table, will almost confirm its place in the WTC 2025 final if they manage to get the better of Pakistan in the ongoing match.
