The opening fixture of the two-match ODI series between Sri Lanka and Australia will take place on Wednesday, February 12. The R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo will host the first game. Having conceded a 0-2 whitewash to the Aussies in Tests, Sri Lanka now have their eyes on redeeming themselves ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Charith Asalanka will lead Sri Lanka in the upcoming ODIs. The left-handed batter will spearhead the host side’s top order alongside Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. On the other hand, Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana will lead Sri Lanka’s bowling attack.
As for Australia, Steve Smith will once again don the captain’s role in the two ODIs. He will be looking to add more success after sweeping past the Asian side in the Test series. Smith led the Aussies to a nine-wicket victory in the second Test with a century. The veteran batter was also awarded the Player of the Series for scoring 272 runs at a jaw-dropping average of 136.00.
While Australia sailed past Sri Lanka in red-ball cricket, they will likely have a relatively more difficult time in the fifty-over format. The hosts are currently on a 10-match winning streak on home turf. They have dominated white-ball cricket, winning six games consecutively. Moreover, both Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood have been ruled out of Australia’s squad for the two matches due to injuries. Mitchell Starc will spearhead the bowling unit alongside Nathan Ellis and Sean Abbott.
