The Sri Lanka cricket team kicked off the ODI series against Australia on a winning note with a 49-run triumph in the first game. Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a total of 214 in Colombo. Skipper Charith Asalanka led the hosts from the front and produced a solid century. He played a fine knock of 127 off 126. Asalanka’s brilliant innings comprised 14 fours and five sixes. Sean Abbott claimed three wickets while Spencer Johnson, Aaron Hardie and Nathan Ellis picked up two wickets each for the visitors.
Australia’s run chase suffered an early blow when their opening batter Matthew Short returned to the dressing room in the first over itself without opening his account.
Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey and Aaron Hardie did offer a fightback with the bat but that was not enough for Australia to secure a win. The Aussies were bowled out for 165 in 33.5 overs. The two teams entered the ODI series after facing each other in two Tests. Australia clean swept Sri Lanka 2-0. The Steve Smith-led side won the first Test by an innings and 242 runs. In the second Test, the visitors scripted a victory by nine wickets.
