Star fast bowler Jhye Richardson, who was part of the Australian squad in the recently concluded five-match Test series against India, is set to undergo shoulder surgery, which will rule him out of the ongoing Big Bash League as well as the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa. The Pat Cummins-led side will face South Africa in the WTC final at Lord’s from June 11 to 15.
According to a report in Cricket.com.au, 28-year-old Richardson, who has played 3 Tests, 15 ODIs, and 18 T20Is so far, “will undergo surgery this week in an attempt to stabilise his shoulder, following a dislocation in November.”
The right-arm fast bowler is aiming for a return next summer, with the Ashes at home in sight.
“After careful consideration and many discussions with my medical team, I’ve made the decision to undergo shoulder surgery to improve stability and reduce the risk of future injury,” Richardson said in a press release. “For the past few years, I have been limited by my shoulder in the field and know how increasingly important it is to be capable to back up my teammates.”
“While it’s a tough call, especially as it means I won’t be able to finish the season with the Scorchers, this is the best option to set me up for a strong and healthy return to cricket.”
“The timing of the surgery is crucial to ensure I have the best possible build-up, including Shield cricket leading into next summer. I’ll be giving everything I’ve got to the rehab process, determined to come back as the best version of myself. Thanks for all the support, and I can’t wait to be back stronger for summer 2025/2026!” he added.
Richardson was added to the Australian squad for the last two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as a replacement of Josh Hazlewood. But the cricketer from Western Australia didn’t get a chance to be part of the playing XI.
Richardson was last seen in action on Saturday, January 11, for the Perth Scorchers during the Big Bash League 2024/25 match against the Sydney Sixers, which was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
