The Mumbai Test between India and New Zealand got underway on Friday with the hosts striking thrice in the morning session. Washington Sundar took two wickets while Akash Deep drew the first blood as the tourists were 92/3 at the lunch break on Day 1 of the third and final Test of the series which they lead 2-0.
India bowlers may have tasted early success at the Wankhede Stadium but they were guilty of overstepping a multiple times and it irked batting legend Sunil Gavaskar who is part of the TV commentary panel for the series.
By the mid of second session, Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja and Akash combined to bowl eight no-balls between them. Of these eight, Sundar was guilty of bowling five.
Right after the lunch break, as Sundar overstepped for fifth time before the no-ball hooter at the venue went up, Ravi Shastri on air quipped how Gavaskar must have reacted to it.
“Sunil Gavaskar was having lunch. He chucked the plate on the wall,” Shastri said before adding, “Thank god he’s (Gavaskar) not fielding in the slip. Washington would have been close to Washington DC.”
