Only Allan Border presented Pat Cummins with the trophy, despite Sunil Gavaskar being present at the ground as well.
India legend Sunil Gavaskar was upset that the match authorities didn’t ask him to join Allan Border in handing over the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia, who won the series 3-1 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Sunday.
Australia won the last Test by six wickets, chasing India’s 162-run target with relative ease on the third day. It was the first time the Aussies could put their hand on the coveted title since 2017, after suffering consecutive losses every two years, home and away.
Border was asked to hand over the trophy to Pat Cummins, while Gavaskar completed his media dutied away from the stage.
“I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all, it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India,” Gavaskar was quoted by Code Sports. “I mean, I am here on the ground. To me, it should not matter that Australia won when it comes to the presentation. They played better cricket so they won. That’s fine. Just because I am an Indian (I did not present the trophy). I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border.”
Earlier, Gavaskar had spoken about his relationship with Border and said he was ‘blessed’ to have the trophy named after them.
“I am very fond of AB (Border). The relationship really blossomed when both of us played for the Rest of the World team vs MCC during the MCC Bicentennial celebrations in 1987. We spent three weeks together, traveling together and playing a few matches against county before the game against MCC. We really bonded, and got to know each other, the culture, and the person. Bit like what IPL does these days, bringing people from different countries together. I feel honored, privileged, and blessed that the series between India and Australia is named after us. Such an iconic series – it’s a blessing,” Gavaskar told the Indian Express.
Australia won the series comprehensively. India took a big win in the first Test in Perth but the hosts came back strongly with a 10-wicket triumph in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide.
The third match at the Gabba was drawn after rain washed away most of the sessions before Australia clinched the crucial moments in Melbourne to go 2-1 up last week.
