Six months back, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar’s on-air rant after watching India cricketer Rishabh Pant lose his wicket after playing a rash shot went viral. Gavaskar slammed Pant on live TV, calling his shot selection as ‘stupid’.
On Friday (June 21), Gavaskar dropped another ‘s’ word. This time, in appreciation of the wicketkeeper-batter who did a somersault after a blockbuster century in the ongoing first Test between India and England in Leeds.
“Superb, superb, superb,” said a smiling Gavaskar from the commentary box watching Pant celebrate his century – the 8th of his Test career.
During the Boxing Day Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year, the India legend blasted Pant for throwing away his wicket.
“Stupid, stupid, stupid,” Gavaskar had said. “You’ve got two fielders there, and you still go for that, you’ve missed the previous shot. And look where you’ve been caught. You’ve been caught at deep third man. That is throwing away your wicket. Not in the situation that India was. You have to understand the situation as well, you cannot say that that’s your natural game. I’m sorry, that is not your natural game. That is a stupid shot. That is letting your team down badly!”
Pant scored 134 off 178 with 12 fours and six sixes.
