Mumbai Indians’ Suryakumar Kumar lit up the skies with his blitzkrieg, aiding the Hardik Pandya-led side to victory, sealing the final IPL 2025 playoff spot, much to the rejoicement of all the fans at the Wankhede.
But it was SKY’s heartwarming gesture to his wife that captured everyone’s hearts.
Suryakumar Yadav’s doughty 73 not out proved to be the difference as Mumbai Indians sealed the fourth and final play-off berth with a 59-run trouncing of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League here on Wednesday.
Suryakumar’s masterclass — a 43-ball knock with seven fours and half a dozen sixes in adverse situations — paved the way for a dominating win, and the POTM award for the fiery batter.
After clinching the award, Surya dedicated his award to his wife, recalling a playful taunt that she had laid out to him earlier.
“It’s been 13 games now. My wife told me a sweet story today. She said you’ve got all the awards except POTM. This award is special today. From the team’s point of view, the knock was important, and also, this trophy is for her. She waits for such moments and we celebrate it obviously, looking forward to it,” Suryakumar Yadav said in the post-match presentation.
Suryakumar Yadav scored his fourth half-century of the ongoing season to help the Mumbai-based franchise post a total of 180 runs for the loss of five wickets after Faf du Plessis invited MI to bat first.
Then Mitchell Santner, Jasprit Bumrah, and Trent Boult produced a super show with the ball to seal a big win for the Mumbai Indians.
The 34-year-old batter, who is now third in the Orange Cap race with 583 runs, behind Gujarat Titans duo Sai Sudharsan (617) and Shubman Gill (601), said they will have their usual celebration with a big cake for this innings.
“She waits for such moments, and we celebrate them when we go back, so really looking forward to it. It was really important for a single batter to bat till the end – we knew there was a 15-20 run over somewhere. The way Naman came in and shared that energy with me (was great),” said Suryakumar Yadav.
