Star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on Tuesday night due to a lower back injury that he suffered while playing against Australia in the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at Sydney Cricket Ground on January 4, 2025. Despite question marks over his fitness due to a back injury, the 31-year-old cricketer from Ahmedabad, who made his international debut for India during an ODI match played against Australia at SCG on January 23, 2016, was named in India’s provisional squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 on January 18, but on the last date to make changes, he was replaced by Harshit Rana.
It is not the first time Bumrah will miss a major ICC tournament for India due to an injury-related issue. In the past as well, Bumrah was ruled out of one T20 World Cup and one World Test Championship final due to a back injury.
Here’s a look at major tournaments missed by Jasprit Bumrah due to injury-related issues:
Asia Cup 2022
Jasprit Bumrah missed the 2022 edition of the Asia Cup, which was played from August 27 to September 11 in the United Arab Emirates, due to a back injury that he suffered while playing for India in the three-match ODI series against England in July 2022. In Bumrah’s absence, India suffered back-to-back defeats against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Super Four matches and failed to qualify for the final.
T20 World Cup 2022
After missing the Asia Cup, Bumrah made a comeback during the home series against Australia in September 2022 but injured his back once again, which ruled him out of the 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup. He was replaced by Mohammed Shami in the squad for the ICC event that was played from October 16 to November 17 in Australia.
IPL 2023
The back injury in September 2022 kept Bumrah out of action for almost 11 months, and due to that, he missed the 2023 edition of IPL for Mumbai Indians. Despite Bumrah’s absence, MI managed to qualify for the playoffs and finished the season in third place.
WTC Final 2023
Bumrah was not available for India in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final against Australia that was played from June 7 to 11 at The Oval. In his absence, India suffered a humiliating defeat by 209 runs against the Pat Cummins-led side in the summit clash to finish as runners-up for the second edition in a row.
Champions Trophy 2025
ICC Cricketer of the Year 2024 Bumrah will not play for India in the Champions Trophy 2025. The 31-year-old fast bowler was ruled out of the eight-team tournament on February 12 due to a lower back injury and was replaced by Harshit Rana in the squad.
