Kashmir, which has not hosted an international cricket match in decades due to persistent security concerns, now faces fresh turmoil after the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed 26 lives and injured several others.

In a strong response, India has suspended the decades-old Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, signalling a shift in its diplomatic stance. This move sends a strong message to Pakistan and is likely to further strain India-Pakistan relations.

Has Kashmir Ever Hosted International Cricket Matches

The Kashmir Valley has hosted international matches previously. The Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has been the venue for two One Day Internationals. Unfortunately, India did not win either of these matches.

What Happened In The 1980s

The two ODIs in Srinagar took place in the 1980s. The first match was held on October 13, 1983, where India faced the West Indies. The West Indies emerged victorious, winning by 28 runs. This match occurred just a few months after India had won its first World Cup at Lord’s by defeating the West Indies. Kapil Dev captained India, while Clive Lloyd led the West Indies.

The second match in Srinagar took place three years later in 1986, where Australia defeated India by three wickets with six balls remaining.

Why Are Matches Not Held In Srinagar Now

Currently, almost every major city in India, including Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, and Chennai, boasts well-equipped cricket stadiums. In contrast, Kashmir lacks adequate sports facilities.

Additionally, the security of international cricketers remains a significant concern. These factors have likely contributed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision not to organise any matches in Kashmir for the past three decades.
