Mumbai Indians opener Rohit Sharma, who produced a match-winning 76-run knock against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday in the IPL 2025 encounter between the sides at the Wankhede, gave a shout out to recently sacked team Indian assistant coach Abhishek Nayar following his unbeaten fifty in the contest between two of the most successful sides in the history of the tournament.

Nayar, who was reportedly given the sack in a rather hostile manner following the Indian team’s sub-par showings in Tests, returned to the IPL circuit, as he joined the Kolkata Knight Riders support staff.

According to sourcers, Rohit was working with Nayar over his batting and fitness amid his rough patch at the Indian camp, and the efforts continued during the IPL. Rohit, who had struggled for form in the ongoing season of the cash-rich T20 franchise league tournament, finally found his touch against CSK and was prompt to show his gratitude to Nayar for helping him out during testing times.

Mumbai skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and put the visitors to bat first as the hosts limited their arch-rivals to a total of 176/5, thanks to half-centuries from Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja, while the side’s youngest ever player Ayush Mhatre chipped in with a brisk 32-run knock.

MI, however, started the chase on positive footing and never looked back despite the fall of Ryan Rickleton to Jadeja after scoring 24 runs off 19 deliveries. Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav remained unbeaten to take Mumbai over the line in 15.4 overs as the latter’s 68-run innings complemented the former skipper’s knock.

MI sailed over the line with 26 deliveries to spare to bring up their fourth win in eight games this season and climbed to sixth in the points table.
