Travis Head may have not made contributed with the bat in the just concluded Melbourne Test between India and Australia but he made a game-changing impact with the ball on the fifth day that opened the doors to a massive victory for his team.
With India putting up a fight after losing three quick wickets in chase of 340 on the final day in front of a record crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia captain Pat Cummins turned to Head but to improve the over-rate his team was falling behind.
Head did much more as he got rid of Rishabh Pant on 30 to break his 88-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal for the fourth wicket. It triggered a collapse as India lost their last seven wickets for the addition of just 34 runs to be 155-all out.
Head, right after getting the key wicket of Pant, turned around and pulled out a strange celebration – something which later Australian team’s media manager looked reluctant to repeat during a media interaction upon being quizzed by Cummins.
Cumins later explained what the celebration is about.
“Oh, sorry! Yes, okay! I can explain that,” Cummins said. His finger is so hot, that he is going to put it in a cup of ice. Yes, that’s what it is. That’s normally the running joke. Was it at the Gabba or somewhere, where he got a wicket as well and just got straight to the fridge, grabs a bucket of ice, puts his finger in and just walks in front of Lyno (Nathan Lyon). Just like that, thinks it’s very funny. So that’s what it would have been, nothing else.”
Australia have ensured they won’t lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for a third time in a row at home having taken a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. A win in the fifth Test in Sydney will not only give them a series win but also ensure their qualification for the final of the ICC World Test Championship.
