In a brief announcement, Ravichandran Ashwin dropped the retirement bomb in Brisbane on Wednesday.
Ravichandran Ashwin has drawn curtains on his international career. The legendary offspinner had a stellar India career that saw him rack up records aplenty and playing a leading role in the team’s ascension as world’s best team.
The surprising decision came at a time when the Indian team is locked in a close battle with Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Ashwin played in one of the three Tests of the five-match series before announcing his retirement on Wednesday after the contest at Brisbane ended in a draw.
Ashwin accompanied Rohit during the post-match media conference and didn’t take any questions while confirming the news.
“This will be my last year as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level,” Ashwin said on Wednesday. “I feel there’s a little bit of punch left in me as a cricketer, but I’d like to express that, showcase that in club-level cricket. I’ve had a lot of fun.”
“I have made a lot of memories alongside Rohit and several of my team-mates, even though we’ve lost some of them (to retirements) over the last few years. We’re the last bunch of OGs, we can say that. I will be marking this as my date of having played at this level. Obviously there are a lot of people to thank, but I will be failing in my duties if I didn’t thank the BCCI and fellow team-mates,” he added.
