We’ve all slept through a few occasions in our lives. Waking up late after having lost ourselves in our dreams.

But, New Zealand’s Bevon Jacobs would be happy to know despite sleeping through the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, his dream of playing in the cash-rich league came true on Monday.

Towards the tail end of the humongous two-day event in Jeddah, after the likes of veterans such as Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Finn Allen and Michael Bracewell had all gone unsold, MI finally raised their paddle to bid for and acquire 22-year old Jacobs for his base price of Rs 30 lakh.

“It was definitely a long shot. I woke up this morning with the big surprise and it was a surprise, it was awesome to see and I think it’s just been a bit overwhelming. I’m looking forward to the opportunity and I’m very grateful for it.”

“I woke up at 5:30 to about a million different messages from family overseas that were able to watch it live. I thought they were pranking me to start off with,” added Jacobs, who said he had made a last-minute decision to put his name forward for the auction.

Known for his explosive batting ability, Jacobs emerged as one of the breakout stars of the 2023-24 season of Super Smash, notching 134 runs at a fiery strike rate of 188.73 as a finisher for the Canterbury Kings.

His prolific outing in the Super Smash caught the attention of Auckland, who recruited him for their red-ball advents in the Plunket Shield, where Jacobs had a solid outing scoring 75 and 79 on his debut against Wellington last month.

So, the uncapped Kiwi realiases the immense opportunity he has earned and aims to utilise the same to evolve and showcase his prowess for all of the cricketing world to see.

“It’s just a massive opportunity. If I get game time that’s definitely a bonus. But just going over there and being able to learn as much as I can from the best in the world, that’s probably the main takeaway for me. Just seeing how much I can absorb while I’m over there,” Jacobs stated.

“Knowing that it (IPL) is a few months away I’m just keeping my head down a bit and I know that I’ve got to look at what’s in front of me and that’s still trying to put my best foot forward for Auckland,” he concluded.
