Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has said that Ishan Kishan had a massive brain fade moment to walk away from the crease despite not being out, adding that he should have waited and let the on-field umpire make the final decision, since they are being paid to do their job as well.

Sunrisers Hyderabad lost their sixth match of IPL 2025, their sixth loss in eight matches, to remain at the ninth spot in the table.

The incident happened on the first delivery of the third over during Hyderabad’s innings. Ishan tried to glance a leg-side length ball from Deepak Chahar, couldn’t make proper contact, and then walked off the field despite no appeal from any of the Mumbai Indians players.

The replays later showed that there was absolutely no part of Ishan’s body, let alone the bat, that touched the ball, leaving everyone wondering why he chose to sacrifice his wicket without even waiting for a strong sentence from the umpire.

“Many times, the mind fails to work at that moment. It was brain fade. Ruk toh jaa. Umpire bhi paise le rahe hai (Stop at least and wait for the umpire to make his decision. He is also charging some amount of money for his job),” Sehwag said while speaking on Cricbuzz.

“Let him do his work. I could not understand this honesty. Had it been an edge, it would have been understandable because that would be in the spirit of the game. But it was neither out; the umpire was unsure and you started walking off all of a sudden,” Sehwag said.

The wicket saw Ishan’s poor run of form continue in the ongoing Indian Premier League as he keeps struggling to score runs after a hundred in the first game.

Instead of putting pressure on the Mumbai bowlers, Hyderabad presented a meek batting show, which was compounded by a reckless decision from Ishan (1), who walked back despite not having edged one behind the stumps.

SRH next play the Chennai Super Kings on April 25 at the latter’s home.
