A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday during a cricket match in Mumbai, leaving the local cricket community in mourning. During the 11th over of a Bhama Cup Under-19 tournament match between KRP XI CC and Crescent CC at the Sundar Cricket Club ground, Mumbai Cricket Association umpire Prasad Malgaonkar (60) suddenly collapsed while officiating at square leg. Despite being immediately rushed to Bombay Hospital, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

As reported by Mid-Day, Prasad Malgonkar, 60, assumed his position at square leg for the 11th over. Tragically, he passed away after just two balls. Before the match, Malgaonkar had mentioned experiencing acidity, according to Umpire Parthamesh Angane.

“He [Malgonkar] was not feeling well, complained of acidity before the toss. I told him, ‘If you are not feeling well, please take rest,’ but he said he’s fine. Even though he was doing fine during the first 10 overs of the game, after 10.2 overs, he fell and was struggling to breathe. Then, Datta Mithbavkar, our MCA coordinator, immediately took him to hospital,” his fellow umpire Parthamesh Angane said speaking to Mid Day.

The unfortunate event has deeply shocked the cricket world, with players and organisers attempting to assist Malgaonkar, but sadly to no avail.

In response, MCA Apex Council member and Umpire Committee Coordinator Surendra Harmalkar expressed profound grief over the incident.

Mid-Day reports that a doctor from the Casualty Ward at Bombay Hospital stated that Prasad Malgonkar was brought to the emergency room with undetectable blood pressure and oxygen levels. An ECG showed no activity, and his pupils were dilated. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

According to the report, the hospital also mentioned that a postmortem was not conducted as the family had obtained a death certificate from their family physician.

Mithbavkar provided more details about the incident at Cross Maidan, explaining their efforts to get Malgonkar to Bombay Hospital as quickly as possible.

“We tried our best to take him to Bombay Hospital as quickly as possible. With the help of Ibrahim sir and players like Salman Khan, Barun Saw and Pravin bhai, we carried him on a charpai [wooden bed] from the Sunder CC pitch to the nearby National CC, from where we got a taxi to Bombay Hospital. But I think he passed away before reaching the hospital,” Mithbavkar was quoted as saying by Mid-Day.
