Suryavanshi began playing cricket at five, trained at Samastipur’s Cricket Academy at seven, later at Patna’s Gen X Academy. He scored 49 centuries and 3 double centuries
Bihar’s Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player ever signed by an IPL team at just 13 years old, as Rajasthan Royals bought him for Rs 1.10 crore in the mega auction on Monday.
Suryavanshi’s base price was Rs 30 lakh, with Delhi Capitals placing the first bid. Rajasthan Royals joined the bidding at Rs 35 lakh and eventually won the auction.
As Suryavanshi makes headlines, let us learn about his journey and how he achieved the feat of being the youngest batter to score an international century in a Youth Test for India Under-19 against Australia U-19 in Chennai.
Suryavanshi started playing cricket at the age of five. When he was seven, he started training at the Cricket Academy in Samastipur and then took further training at the Gen X Cricket Academy in Patna. During his cricket career, Vaibhav scored 49 centuries and three double centuries in a year.
In 2023, he scored 670 runs in the Hayman Trophy, which included three centuries and three half-centuries.
In October 2023, Vaibhav was selected for the Vinoo Mankad Under-19 tournament, where he scored the highest, 393 runs, for Bihar. His performance came to the attention of the BCA (Bihar Cricket Association), and he got a chance to move forward.
In a conversation with Local18, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s coach, Brijesh Jha, spoke about the cricketer’s career and hard work. He shared that he had realised Suryavanshi had a bright future in cricket from childhood.
“When Vaibhav was young, he used to come to Patel ground every day from 2:30 pm to practise and worked hard until evening. When he grew older, he started coming to the morning batch and practised and worked very hard in this too,” Jha said.
Jha commended Suryavanshi’s hard work, noting that while he was mischievous in his childhood, his discipline and dedication improved as he matured. Suryavanshi’s father, Sanjeev Suryavanshi, played a crucial role by bringing him to practice daily. The coach expressed his delight that Suryavanshi will now benefit from the support of Rahul Dravid.
Jha believes Suryavanshi will perform even better under the leadership of an experienced coach like Dravid and can reach new heights in cricket. He expressed pride that a young player, who once practised with him, has made it to the IPL.
