Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s father has gone on to suggest that he would be willing to undergo necessary tests on his son to prove his age amidst confusion after his record IPL deal.
The 2025 Mega Auction in the Indian Premier League saw Vaibhav Suryavanshi taking the headlines on Day 2 of the event where he became the youngest player to be bought by a franchise.
Many media outlets suggested that Suryavanshi is only 13 years old, but an interview from 2023 has surfaced online that he might be 15 years old now, thus creating confusion regarding his actual age.
According to IPL’s data on their official website, the official records show that he was 14 years old at the time of the auction. But an earlier interview uploaded by BNN News Benipatti on April 2023 has the player claiming that he would turn 14 in September, later that year. This would mean that he would have turned 15 by now.
A possible explanation for the confusion is that the player data collected for the 2025 Mega Auction was conducted before his 15th birthday. In the interview, Suryavanshi indicated that his birthday was in September.
Nonetheless, he still holds the record for being the youngest player bought in the auction. The previous person to hold that record was Prayas Ray Barman who went to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at 16 years old, in the 2019 auction. The Bengal-based cricketer’s IPL career did not last long as he did not feature in the tournament since that season.
His father, in an interview with PTI, has suggested that he is more than willing to undergo the necessary tests to help prove his age and end the confusion if necessary.
“When he was 8 and half years old he first appeared for a BCCI bone test. He has already played India U-19. We don’t fear anyone. He can again undergo age test,” he said.
With the Rajasthan Royals, he would be working under the T20 World Cup-winning coach, Rahul Dravid, who has worked his way up the ladder and has enough experience working with young talents.
Another key player within the squad who could support him is the Indian all-rounder, Riyan Parag who made his IPL debut at just 17 years old in 2019 and has endured a tough start to his IPL career but pushed through to establish himself as a top talent for the future.
Suryavanshi is already making waves at the youth levels having scored a sensational 58-ball hundred against Australia in a youth Test in Chennai, earlier this year.
It remains to be seen if the youngster can handle the pressures of what comes with a high-profile tournament like the IPL, or if he even gets the chance to play at all.
