Maharashtra outplayed Punjab by 70 runs, while Karnataka edged Baroda by 5 runs in a thriller to book semifinal spots in Vijay Hazare Trophy.
The third and fourth quarterfinals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 edition saw Karnataka and Karnataka go through to the semis after they beat Punjab and Baroda respectively. Maharashtra, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad took the win by 70 runs over the Abhishek Sharma-led side, while Mayank Agarwal’s Karnataka went past Baroda to win by 5 runs as Krunal Pandya’s Baroda failed to make the most out of their batting unit.
Gaikwad couldn’t do much with the bat but his opening partner, Arshin Kulkarni, had a blast. The young all-rounder smashed a century, scoring 107 off 137 balls with 14 boundaries. Batting at no. 4, Ankit Bawne scored 60 off 85 while wicketkeeper-batter Nikhil Naik smashed a 29-ball 52 as Maharashtra posted 275 for 5 in 50 overs.
In reply, the Punjab batting line-up bowled out for 205 in 44.4 overs. Anmolpreet Singh scored a 48 off 77 balls while Arshdeep Singh put up a commendable fight with the bat, missing out on a fifty by just a run. His 49-run innings included 3 maximums and as many boundaries.
For Maharashtra, Mukesh Choudhary returned figures of 3 for 44 while Arshdeep scalped as many wickets for Punjab in the first innings.
In the quarter-final 4 at the Moti Bagh Stadium, Baroda fell short of 5 runs to beat Karnataka and progress to the next round of the ongoing tournament. Karnataka posted 281 for 8, on the back of Devdutt Padikkal’s scintillating century and a fifty from Aneesh KV. Padikkal scored a 102 off 99 balls with the help of 2 sixes and 15 boundaries while Aneesh smashed 4 fours and a six during his 52-run stint in the middle.
Baroda gave a tough fight to Mayank Agarwal & Co in the chase of 282. Opener Shashwat Rawat set the tone with a 104-run knock and a century partnership with Atit Sheth for the second wicket. But once their camaraderie was broken by Shreyas Gopal as Baroda suffered a batting collapse.
Though the likes of Krunal Pandya, Bhanu Pania and Bhargav Bhatt tried to finish the chase Karnataka aced the game, winning the nail-biter by 5 runs.
Karnataka will now face the winners of the first quarter-final which will be played between Gujarat and Haryana on Sunday. On the other hand, the winner of the second quarter-final, between Vidarbha and Rajasthan will face Maharashtra in the semis.
