Batting superstar Virat Kohli entered his name in the history books on Tuesday (March 4) by becoming India’s leading run scorer in the Champions Trophy. The 36-year-old right-handed batter broke Shikhar Dhawan’s record of 701 runs to take the No. 1 position. Kohli needed 40 runs in the ongoing match against Australia at Dubai International Cricket Stadium to break Dhawan’s record, and he achieved the objective by taking single on the fourth over of the 23rd over of the run chase bowled by Glenn Maxwell.
Dhawan played 10 matches for India in the Champions Trophy across two editions, and with the help of three centuries and three fifties, scored 701 runs. On the other hand, the first semifinal in Dubai on Tuesday is Kohli’s 17th Champions Trophy match for Men in Blue.
Kohli made his Champions Trophy debut for India in the 2009 edition, and then he played a big role in Team India’s title win in the 2013 edition. In the 2017 edition, he led India to the final, and in the ongoing 2025 edition, the right-handed batter has already scored one century. He remained unbeaten on 100 runs from 111 balls against Pakistan in Dubai on February 23, 2025.
The overall record of scoring the most runs in the Champions Trophy is in the name of former West Indies batter Chris Gayle. Gayle played 17 matches for Men in Maroon and scored 791 runs. Gayle is followed by former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene. Jayawardene played 22 matches for Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy and scored 742 runs.
Most runs in Champions Trophy
- Chris Gayle (West Indies) – 791
- Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) – 742
- Virat Kohli (India) – 702*
- Shikhar Dhawan (India) – 701
- Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) – 683
Kohli will have a chance to overtake Jayawardene in the ongoing match. He needs to score at least 81 runs to surpass Mahela’s tally. If the Indian batter scores 130 runs in the run chase, then he will break Gayle’s record as well and take the No. 1 position.
The ongoing match in Dubai is Kohli’s 50th ODI against Australia. If Kohli manages to score a century in the match, then he will equal Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most ODI centuries for India against the six-time ODI World Cup winners. Tendulkar finished his career with nine centuries in ODIs against Australia.
