Virat Kohli walked out at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday to bat in the 200th innings of his Test career. His presence was essential as India had hit the panic button, losing back-to-back wickets off Ajaz Patel’s bowling. Though the former India captain denied the New Zealand tweaker a hat-trick, what he ended up doing in the next over was a complete hara-kiri.
Kohli drove Rachin Ravindra’s flighted delivery towards mid-on and called for a single. Matt Henry, at short mid-on, ran quickly to grab the ball and hit the bull’s eye. Kohli dived full length but it wasn’t his day, again. The ace batter fell short of his crease as India lost three batters within 10 minutes for just six runs.
“India committing hara-kiri in the last 10 minutes”, said Ravi Shastri while calling the game.
Earlier, the spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja (five for 65) and Washington Sundar (four for 81) shared nine wickets between them to bowl out New Zealand shortly after tea. While Washington continued his stellar run, Jadeja picked up his 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Daryl Mitchell (82) and Will Young (71) were the top scorers for the tourists.
In reply, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma (18) early. Yashasvi Jaiswal (30) and Shubman Gill (31 not out) then helped India seize control with a 53-run stand but Ajaz Patel picked up two wickets in two balls as he accounted for Jaiswal and night watchman Mohammed Siraj (0).
Gill and Rishabh Pant (one not out) were manning the crease at stumps, as the hosts still trailed by 149 runs.
