After scoring an eight-ball duck in the first inning of the ongoing first Test between India and Australia at Optus Stadium in Perth, young Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has impressed with his performance in the second inning so far. He scored 42 runs from 88 balls in the second session of the second day’s play and added 84 runs for the first wicket with KL Rahul. He hammered five fours in the mid-session of Day 2, and one of the boundaries that he hit off Mitchell Starc’s bowling impressed his Indian teammates who were watching the match from the dressing room.

In a video going viral on the internet, after Jaiswal smacked Starc for a four, Virat Kohli can be seen getting up in excitement and giving a standing ovation to the 22-year-old cricketer, who is India’s highest-ranked Test batter.

India will have high expectations from Jaiswal in the ongoing match. The left-handed batter from Mumbai who made his Test debut last year has scored more than 1100 Test runs in 2024. The Indian team management will hope Jaiswal can convert his good start into a big score and help India post a big total in the second innings and set a big target for the Pat Cummins-led side to chase down in the fourth innings of the match.

Aus all out for 104

In the ongoing first Test, after posting a total of 150 runs in the first innings, India dismissed Australia for 104 runs to take a crucial lead of 46 runs. For Australia, Mitchell Starc top-scored by making 26 runs, and wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey contributed 21 runs. Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah finished the first inning with figures of 5 for 30, and three Aussie batters were sent back to the pavilion by Harshit Rana.

On his international debut for India, the 22-year-old pacer from Delhi got rid of Travis Head, Nathan Lyon, and Starc. Mohammed Siraj, who was preferred over Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna in the playing XI, also managed to take two wickets. He dismissed Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh.
